Obidos It is a magical town located on the west coast of central Portugal, about an hour away by bus from Lisbon the capital. It is a town completely surrounded by a wall, along with several surrounding satellite villages. The town is considered one of the most popular day trips from Lisbon, but there are many who also choose to spend two or more days there. 

Óbidos is worth a long visit not only because of the nature and the surrounding villages (which definitely warrant a visit in themselves), but also because of the town itself and what it has to offer. You will find monuments from the Middle Ages (such as the famous castle), the Porta da Vila gate where you enter the city and which leads to the main and very touristic street of the town. You will find an authentic Portuguese atmosphere in it that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else, all if you just choose to move a little away from the center of the town and wander through the nearby alleys. The envelope provided by the wall will constantly remind you that you are in a historical relic of the highest order, one that has caused UNESCO to define the city as a "city of literature", and Portugal to declare it a national site. 

When is it recommended to come to Óbidos?

Óbidos, unlike other cities in Europe in general and Portugal in particular, experiences the peak of its tourism season precisely in April and not in the summer. Since it is a small town not everyone sleeps there, those who do prefer to stay there in the season when the weather is comfortable. In April, the city's alleys are filled with tourists and locals who come to vacation there, and the prices of the many hotels and guest houses scattered around it increase significantly. Take this into account if you are interested in booking a vacation in Óbidos during this period. January and May are also particularly busy in Óbidos, although less so than April.

Similar to the rest of the country, in Óbidos, too, prices drop when winter arrives. In the winter months, the city is almost empty of tourists, so the hotels that want to fill every possible room offer profitable deals at very accessible prices. However, the Portuguese winter is known for its heavy rains, so it is recommended to prepare well in advance before you decide to spend your winter holiday in Óbidos. If you prepare properly, you will be able to enjoy the romantic city almost to yourself, and at a price that will allow you to invest much more in other attractions and trips in the area. 

Hotels in Óbidos - where and how?

Óbidos is a small town, so it doesn't have much division when it comes to accommodation areas. You can reach every part of it on foot, so hotel prices are mainly determined by the level of the hotel and not by its location (although the hotels closer to the main street will probably be more expensive). This is a destination that attracts mainly middle-aged tourists, so the hotel offer is also adapted to them. Most of the hotels are relatively small and at higher than average prices, but you can also find guesthouses whose prices are adjusted even for those with a limited budget. 

If you wish, you can spend the night in one of the villages surrounding Óbidos (and located in the same municipal area). Accommodation in them will often be cheaper, but keep in mind that your mobility options will be significantly more limited. In any case, it will be more convenient for you to have a car if you want to spend the night in Óbidos and travel around the area, but if you have settled in its satellite village and want to leave it, renting a car will be almost mandatory.
